KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The traditional blockchain interaction model is outdated, prompting developers to seek new solutions.
  • ERC4337 Account Abstraction improved user experience but struggled with adoption due to its single-chain limitations.
  • Supertransactions and the Modular Execution Environment (MEE) offer a new, versatile transaction model for multi-chain interactions.
  • The Biconomy Protocol is the first implementation of MEE, enhancing blockchain execution with Proof of Stake guarantees.

Ever since the launch of smart contract blockchains a decade ago, the interaction model between users and developers has largely remained unchanged. Traditionally, an application encodes a transaction, the user signs it, and it is sent to a blockchain node for processing and inclusion into the chain. This model has been deemed inadequate, leading developers to implement various workarounds over the years.

One of the most notable solutions has been the ERC4337 Account Abstraction standard, which improved the on-chain user experience but faced challenges in achieving widespread adoption. This standard was limited to a single-chain, single-VM model, requiring users to migrate to non-portable Smart Contract Accounts. As blockchain usage trends towards multi-chain interactions, existing standards have proven insufficient.

The Execution Revolution

To address these limitations, a new execution environment is needed—one that operates across multiple blockchains, virtual machines, and execution models. This environment requires a versatile transaction model capable of containing multiple transactions, intents for execution, and even off-chain actions, all represented by a single transaction hash.

Through research and development, two new concepts have emerged: the Supertransaction and the Modular Execution Environment (MEE). These innovations aim to enhance both user and developer experiences for the next decade of blockchain innovation.

Supertransactions and Modular Execution Environment

Supertransactions represent an evolution in the blockchain transaction model. They are backwards compatible with existing wallets and tooling, supporting modern execution models such as UserOps and Intents. A Supertransaction is a data structure containing multiple instructions for actions a user wishes to achieve, allowing for a single signature to authorize actions across multiple blockchains and execution modalities.

The Modular Execution Environment (MEE) is a permissionless network providing credible execution for various off-chain and on-chain instructions within the Supertransaction data model. MEEs support a wide range of execution requests, from transactions and intents to cross-chain messages and off-chain actions through oracles or ZK proofs.

The Biconomy Protocol is the first implementation of a Modular Execution Environment. It operates as a permissionless peer-to-peer network using Proof of Stake guarantees to execute Supertransactions. Nodes collaborate on execution, with cryptographic commitments ensuring accountability. The protocol supports both Smart Contract Accounts and EOAs, aligning with principles of decentralization and immutability.
