NEW YORK – May 7, 2025 – Sei Labs has submitted a new Sei Improvement Proposal (SIP) aimed at simplifying the architecture of the Sei blockchain by transitioning to an EVM-only framework. The proposal, known as Sei Improvement Proposal-3 (SIP-3), seeks to deprecate CosmWasm and native Cosmos transactions in favor of a streamlined Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) architecture.
This initiative marks the second proposal under the recently established Sei Improvement Proposal process. The goal is to align Sei’s infrastructure more closely with the broader Ethereum ecosystem, enhancing the developer experience and supporting the growth of decentralized finance (DeFi), gaming, and real-world applications.
Jay Jog, Co-Founder of Sei Labs, stated, “This SIP demonstrates Sei Labs’s commitment to supporting a truly participatory design process for the Sei protocol.” He emphasized that as EVM usage continues to dominate activity on Sei, the proposal reflects a clear path forward with an EVM-first architecture.
Standardized Governance Framework
The proposal follows the launch of the Sei Improvement Proposal framework, introduced via SIP-1. This framework provides a standardized, open governance process that empowers developers, validators, and users to propose, debate, and implement changes to the Sei protocol. The process is designed to be transparent and technically rigorous, fostering a more decentralized and community-driven future for the network.
The SIP framework outlines a lifecycle for protocol upgrades, from idea submission and community review to final implementation. The first ecosystem SIP has already been submitted by Silo Finance, which proposes Maximum Extractable Value (MEV)-enhancing functionality through offchain transaction bundles. This indicates early adoption of the process by ecosystem contributors.

Why This Matters: Impact, Industry Trends & Expert Insights
Sei Labs has proposed a new Sei Improvement Proposal (SIP) to transition to an EVM-only architecture, aiming to enhance the developer ecosystem by aligning more closely with the Ethereum ecosystem.
Recent industry reports indicate that EVM adoption is becoming increasingly prevalent across various blockchain ecosystems, including Cosmos. This trend is evident as Sei Labs moves to streamline its architecture with an EVM-only framework, potentially enhancing compatibility and efficiency for Ethereum-based smart contracts.
A The Block report highlights that Sei Labs is actively working on improving its blockchain through initiatives like the Sei V2 upgrade and the Giga roadmap, focusing on EVM compatibility and performance. This supports the significance of the SIP-3 proposal, as it aligns with Sei Labs’ broader goals of enhancing network capabilities.
